My message this year:

My message this year:
Use and re-use stuff. Go thrifting, look for antiques, wear hand-me-downs, recycle, be conscious, spread this message and be truly grateful for the simple things in life. The newest Marc Jacobs bag won't make you half as happy as will spending a great afternoon with the ones you love. Think about it.

Lace love

The 80's have been slowly crawling into my closet and just now I've realised how many items I have from that decade. I love that borderline look when you are skirting the edge of kitsch but still pull it off (hopefully). I am specially loving all lacy tops -- specially black lace-- and gloves and all that jazz that Madonna played with so well once... Big bows for the hair are also tempting me.

Three things I can't live without:

1- My black vintage beret!

Photobucket
  • Beret: My mom bought this one in London over 20 years ago. We are probably the same age, the beret and I. This beret polishes off so well many looks.
  • Secretary blouse and velvet shorts: Brazilian superb boutique Leeloo
  • Patent leather bag: Hand made. Bought at a local market here in Rio.
  • Ankle boots: Brazilian boutique Arezzo.
Details: (no beret close-up because all black berets are alike LOL):

2 - My vintage Gucci belt!

Photobucket
  • Top: Vintage from my mom's closet. Probably bought in Italy.
  • Velvet shorts: Leeloo
  • Belt: Vintage Gucci from my mom's closet.
  • Plastic oxford shoes: Alexandre Herchcovitch for Melissa shoes
  • Bag: Salvatore Ferragamo.
Details:

3- My vintage Marco Rica skirt!

Photobucket
  • Top: Brazilian boutique Ecletic
  • Necklace: Brazilian designer Rosana Bernardes. Makes me feel very MK Olsen...
  • Skirt: Vintage Marco Rica I found at my mom's closet
  • Bag: Italian leather bag. It belonged to my gramma and she says she's had it for about 30 years.
  • Mary-Janes: Brazilian boutique Arezzo.

Meet Marco Rica: Famous during the 70's, Marco Rica was renowned for the great cut and perfect fit of his creations. He insisted in couture quality even though all of his pieces were prepared on sewing machines. Not one stich by hand!

Ironically, the designer -- who hated runway shows for making him too nervous -- always said he despised trends and by no means was a follower... But I guess he could not avoid "trendiness" being linked to his label those days -- and even today!

Photobucket
  • "I think I know how to put the fabric into the correct shape" - Marco Rica.
  • "Don't produce fashion foccusing on getting the media's attention. Why invent a collection no one will ever be able to wear?" - Marco Rica.

Hope this inspires you! Thanks for all the comments :D

Being Laura Dannon!

I'm yet to meet a fashionable girl who did not fall completly in love with the pheasant fascinator that was worn by Nora Zehetner's character on Brick, the femme fatale Laura Dannon.

Photobucket
  • Promotional image from the movie Brick, by Rian Johnson, showing characters Brendan (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and Laura (Nora Zehetner).
I am really obsessed with hair/head accessories and that movie is totally to blame. What a magnificent wardrobe they had. So my search for my own stunning fascinator began the first time I watched the movie. But after some time searching and searching I was beginning to come to terms with the fact that it seemed a hopeless endevour. But people, don't fret! Things took a good turn when I came accross an online store that could mend my broken heart! YAY! Check this out!

Photobucket
  • This is a photo of my lovely fascinator (collage done by me with Bonadrag Boutique's main page illustration).

The store is The Bonadrag Boutique and it has all sorts of pretty things, including the PERFECT pheasant fascinator which you've seen on the above image. Heather, who is the store owner is a sweetheart and even sent me, along with my order, a cd with an awesome compillation of songs to get me into the Bonadrag mood. I highly recommend her store :D

Photobucket
  • Clockwise from the top: The CD "Bonadrag Mixtape Vol.4";
  • detail of the box Heather uses as Bonadrag package. Bonadrag reclycles! *claps, claps*';
  • peek into the songlist;
  • the hair clip on the back of fascinator (does not slip off straight hair).
Below a few photos of my fascinator experimenting!

Photobucket
  • Left & center: Day look with high-waisted skirt and belt by brazilian boutique Leeloo, top by brazilian Eclectic, ankle-boots by Arezzo and 30's vintage purse thriftted at Desculpe, Sou Chique.
  • Right: Night look with brazilian X-site dress, Chanel vintage belt and sandals by brazilian designer Mara Mac.

Photobucket
  • Me being Laura Dannon (or trying lol).

Thanks for everything, Heather! And thank you all for visiting here and leaving me such lovely comments :D

Thrifting and family hand me downs...

Oh boy! My last thrifting spree was such a fruitful one! It's very rare that I find really good vintage stuff at thrifting shops here in Rio because it's like they are just not very specialized in "vintage per se". Mostly they have second hand stuff from this decade, like stuff that I saw on windows a few years ago.... and any antique piece is usually in not so good shape. In addition, there is also this crazy thing about sizing that while most online vintage items are too small for me, 99% of vintage dresses in Rio could fit both my grammas in at the same time! Gawd! So I was in awe when I found the following at "Desculpe, sou chique", which by the way is by far the best thrifting shop in the city.

Photobucket
  • Vintage 80's night blouse - I'm aware that, judging by this photograph, it looks like a clown blouse. But it has unbeliaveble fit: broad 80's shoulders, fitted waist and flared at the hips.... I'll post a photograph of me wearing it soon -- in case you didn't get the idea :D

Photobucket
  • Valentino Italy leather belt;
  • Spanish amazing leather belt.

Photobucket
  • Vintage 30's purse -- my favourite!!!

Actually, my new goodies day began earlier on, in my mom's closet! She gently and freely passed on to me ("Mom, can I have them pleeeease?????") these two magnificent high waist pencil skirts from the 70's. Just a little tailoring adjustments and TA-DA! So precious....

Photobucket
  • Raspeberry Queenie Paris (address NYC);
  • Black Yves Saint-Laurent.
And the grand finalle was while visiting my godmother (my mom's sister). Look at all those pretty things she gave me from her superb closet.....

Photobucket
  • Pastel rose pure silk from brazilian designer Mara Mac;
  • Flower pattern pure silk from Zara (I feel so Carrie Bradshaw in these two dresses...)

Photobucket
  • Exclusive model vintage 30's inpired sequin 60's dress from brazilian designer Gloria Modas (it has a separate tan coloured lining).

Photobucket
  • Vintage Fendi 70's night clutch;
  • Vintage 70's night purse;
  • Vintage 80's sheer Chanel top (no lining -- still figuring out how to wear this one).
Any comments or suggestions?

Nina.
